The particular conformation of the area makes it a perfect habitat for some animal species that are rare in Italy: the reserve is home to the Apuan alpine newt, the spectacled salamander, and the italic frog. Among mammals: the otter, greater and lesser horseshoe, marten, skunk and wild cat.
