The Village
The history of the village
The ancient village of Montacuto (in the Middle Ages called “Montagutolo”) stands on the top of the hill of the same name (470 meters above sea level), where the remains of the ancient fortress are still visible. Montacuto was in fact one of the castles erected by the Sienese counts of Ardenghesca. The castle stood in the heart of the Maremma heritage territory of the Ardengheschi counts, in a strategic position with respect to two very important communication routes in the Middle Ages, which connected the Maremma Tyrrhenian coast with the Sienese and Chiusi areas. In 1202 Montacuto was already a municipality and had its own statute, a fact that indicates the importance of that town for the Sienese administration of the territory. In fact, it turns out that about ninety families lived in Montacuto at that time.
As of today, Montacuto consists of a small nucleus of adjoining farmhouses and three separate and independent cottages, from which two cottages and an apartment have been obtained, finely restored in stone and wood according to the typical Tuscan craft tradition. Its strategic location allows you to enjoy an incredible view of the surrounding hills and valleys, rich in forests, olive groves and vineyards. Walking along the paths among the fields, it is easy to meet all sorts of wild animals: porcupines, hares, pheasants, wild boars, deer.
